Hi Read, I am 45 and have had the scs since June of 2007.It has to be removed because the leads shifted and drugs do not think it will help me to replace it.What they don't tell you is what to expect while trying to get it programmed.I had the trial and it was Fantastic.They can't place the leads in the same place with the permanent one as they do with the trial because with trial wires are on outside of body.They do try to get it as close as possible.I was told that it would help with low back pain as well as leg pain.After leads shifted I was told it was basically for leg pain.it sounds like I am being kind of negative but I would recommend this to anyone to try to get leg pain relief.With permanent one you can look forward to weeks of trying to get programmed right with a trained aide.You will experience tingling and electric shock like impulses which can be very painful.Make sure you turn it off when sleeping or you can get extremely painful shocks.Sometimes that can happen just in changing positions.I feel like the trial was a piece of cake to program and the permanent one was very different.I do think it is worth a shot but I think they should let you talk to people that have one first so you know what to expect.Also no more mris or going thru metal detectors.Heart defibrillators can be dangerous if used on high voltage too.I was not told any of this before I had mine.Make sure to ask lots of questions before getting one but if you go ahead I pray that it will work wonders for you and anyone else getting one.
